Dulquer Salmaan apologises for ‘Prabhakaran’ joke; clarifies that the reference is to the iconic dialogue from Malayalam film ‘Pattana Pravesham’
Anoop Sathyan’s directorial ‘Varane Avashyamund’ has been getting criticism ever since the movie was released on OTT platforms. After the controversy of a woman’s picture being used in the film without her consent, the movie is now making headlines for the ‘Prabhakaran’ joke and Dulquer Salmaan who is both the actor and producer of the movie has apologised for the same.

The movie has a sequence where Major Unnikrishnan (Suresh Gopi) calls the dog by the name Prabhakara. In the plot, the Major comes to know that pets respond to any name if called affectionately and tries the same using the name ‘Prabhakara’. Most of the Keralite audience easily connected to the name, as it is a popular name in Kerala and also there is an iconic dialogue in an old Malayalam movie ‘Pattana Pravesham’, where Thilakan, emotionally calls ‘Prabhakara’. Although Keralites found it hilarious, Tamil audience mistook the context and they interpreted it as a sarcastic reference to defame LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

Dulquer Salmaan has taken to his social media handle and clarified the context and also added that the ‘Prabhakaran’ joke was totally unintentional if Tamil audience found it insulting. The actor apologised for the same. However, the actor also expressed his disapproval for the targeting, abusive and threatening comments towards the family of who worked in the movie.

He wrote, “A lot of people have brought to my notice that the Prabhakaran joke in Varane Avashyamund is insulting to the Tamizh people. It was not intentional. The joke is a reference to an older Malayalam film Pattana Pravesham and is a common Meme in Kerala. It is a common name in Kerala as well so it wasn’t directed at any person living or dead as our disclaimer mentions in the beginning of the film. Most people reacting are doing so without watching the film and are trying to spread hate. Hating on me and my director Anoop we can accept. Kindly keep it to us and not our fathers or senior actors from the film. I apologise to all of the good and kind tamizh people who felt offended. I have never intended to offend anyone through my films or my words. It’s genuinely a misunderstanding. P.S. Some of you are being extremely abusive, threatening, deliberately hurtful and insulting family along with us. I wish that weren’t so.”

Directed by Anoop Sathyan, 'Varane Avashyamund' had actors Suresh Gopi, Shobana, Dulquer Salmaan and Kalyani Priyadarshan in lead roles. The movie that won hearts and also box-office success has been stirring up controversies ever since it got released on OTT platforms. A couple of days ago, a woman accused the team of using her photograph in the movie without her consent. Director Anoop Sathyan and actor Dulquer Salmaan had apologised for the same and said that they will look into it. ‘Varane Avashyamund’ also happens to be one of the most awaited movies of 2020, as Shobana and Suresh Gopi were making their own comebacks along with Kalyani Priyadarshan who made her debut in Mollywood with the movie.
